How we Hear – A Complex process
Three parts of the ear are involved in the hearing process: the outer ear, the middle ear and the inner ear. Hearing begins when sound waves enter the outer ear and travel through the ear canal to the eardrum, causing it to vibrate. These vibrations travel through three tiny bones in the middle ear, called the ossicles. The ossicles cause the sound to be amplified before it enters the inner ear.
The inner ear contains a fluid-filled cochlea that is lined with thousands of tiny hair cells. As the fluid moves in waves along the cochlea, approximately 12,000 hair cells bend. The frequency and intensity of the sound is determined by which hair cells bend. The action causes nerve impulses to travel up the auditory nerve to the brain for processing. These nerve impulses are the "language" that the brain understands and converts into meaningful sounds.

New Born Hearing Screening
The primary justification for early identification of hearing impairment in infants relates to the impact of hearing impairment on speech and language acquisition, academic achievement, and social and emotional development [1-3]. The first three years of life are most important for speech and language acquisition.
When will the hearing screening test be done?
  • Your baby will be offered the hearing screening test within the first few weeks of life.
  • The hearing screen is usually done before you leave the maternity unit.
Tinnitus is not a disease, but a symptom resulting from a range of underlying causes. When you suffer from tinnitus, you perceive certain sounds that are generated by the nervous system of the ear and brain. The cause of tinnitus is not fully known and at present no medical treatment exists that can cure it. The sounds are often characterised as hissing, ringing, buzzing, humming or the like.

A large variety of methods exist to deal with tinnitus, the most common being the use of hearing aids or various sound generators, various types of psychological approaches, therapies etc. Many companies offer hearing aids with a tinnitus program which can aid in the management of tinnitus.
Advice for dealing with tinnitus
The following advice can help you deal with tinnitus and its effects:

  • Make use of sound. The amplified sound from your hearing aid for example, is often enough to make tinnitus less irritating.
  • Avoid silence. For example, turn on the radio on when you’re home alone or listen to some music.
  • Try to avoid the excessive use of alcohol, nicotine, caffeine and some types of painkillers.
  • Be aware of food containing a lot of salt; it can worsen the effects of tinnitus.
  • Try to be physically active or allow yourself some breaks during the day to reduce stress.

Speech-Language Therapy

Digital hearing aid, small hearing aidsIn a recent parent-teacher conference, the teacher expressed concern that your child may have a problem with certain speech or language skills. Or perhaps while talking to your child, you noticed an occasional stutter. Could your child have a problem? And if so, what should you do?
It's wise to intervene quickly. An evaluation by a certified speech-language pathologist can help determine if your child is having difficulties.

The main difference between analogue, the conventional system, and digital, the new technology, is in their method of conversion. Analogue converts sound waves to electrical waves while digital converts sound waves using exact mathematical calculations that are processed by a computer

Analogue Hearing Aids

Do not distinguish different sounds and therefore amplify all sounds equally, which means some sounds, are too loud while others may be difficult to hear. This is rectified when the hearing aid user adjusts the volume.

Programmable analogue hearing aids are equipped with different programs that are saved in the aid. The programs are then switched depending on the listening environment. As an example, one program will work during a conversation, while the other may work best while in the theatre.

Digital Hearing Aids

Translate sound to digital code, change it and re-transmit it back by using mathematical calculations. Duplicates sound transmission. Produces a high quality sound that is extremely accurate. Many believe that the digital system has revolutionized hearing by accurately duplicating sound transmission. Digital hearing aids have many benefits and lots of automatic features, although some still believe that programmable analogue aids possess great sound quality and functionality and are great in that they are more affordable.

Small Hearing Aids

They offer a variety of services at reasonable rates. The affordable hearing aids are available in many types and styles that cater to various kind and degree of hearing loss, power requirements and options, manual dexterity abilities, cost factors, and cosmetic concerns.

Hearing Aid Types and Styles

There are many types and styles of hearing aids. The kind and degree of hearing loss, power requirements and options, manual dexterity abilities, cost factors, and cosmetic concerns are some of the factors that will determine the exact hearing aid type and style the patient will use.

The most common types and styles are listed below:

BTE, BE or Behind-The-Ear
These hearing aids are the largest hearing aids and they are very reliable. BTEs have the most circuit options and they typically offer much more power than custom made units. BTEs are the units that rest on the back of your ear. They are connected to the ear canal via custom-made plastic tubing. The tubing is part of the ear mould. The ear mould is custom made from an ear impression to perfectly replicate the size and shape of your ear.

ITE or In-The-Ear

These hearing aids are probably the most comfortable, the least expensive and the easiest to operate. They are also the largest of the custom made styles.

CIC or Completely-In-The-Canal

These hearing aids are the tiniest hearing aids made. They usually require a "removal string" due to their small size and the fact that they fit deeply into the ear canal. CICs can be difficult to remove without the pull string. CICs do not usually have manual controls attached to them because they are too small.

IIC or Invisible-in-canal

IIC model is tiniest, it is placed deep into the ear canal, providing not only better sound but also more comfort. CICs do not usually have manual controls attached to them because they are too small. Unlike other hearing aids, the IIC has no joined parts and therefore no hard edges - adding extra comfort for hearing aid users. For mild to moderately severe hearing loss.

Receiver-In-Canal (RIC)

The receiver-in-canal (RIC) model is a newer development in hearing aids and is suitable for mild to severe hearing loss.Compared to a classic behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aid, the receiver of the RIC (the loudspeaker) is placed in the ear-tip instead of in the housing, thereby reducing its size.

The RIC model consists of three parts: The housing, which sits behind the ear, and a thin earwire connecting the housing to the receiver. The receiver goes directly into the ear canal. The RIC model is a very discreet, yet powerful hearing aid, which works fully automatically.

Repair & Servicing: Sonic will do Repairing & Servicing of all hearing aids. Body level hearing aid will having 6 month warranty, Semi digital hearing aid will having 1 year warranty, digital hearing aid will having 2 years warranty. Hearing aid is warranted against any manufacturing defect and same will be provided by Hearing Aid Company not by distributor. Paid extended warranty will also available with some of companies.

Hearing Aid Batteries

Hearing aids require a lot of power and energy. For this reason, zinc air batteries are most often used because they produce a large amount of energy despite their very light weight.
• Yellow - Size 10
• Orange - Size 13
• Brown - Size 312
• Blue - Size 675

Each hearing aid requires a specific battery size and, thanks to customer feedback, companies have now adopted a universal system to help customers better remember and match their battery with their aid.

Power One zinc air batteries are made in Germany by Varta Microbatteries. Power One batteries is regarded as one of Europe's leading brands. The high and stable voltage level ensures long running times in high power and digital hearing devices.
Power One batteries have extra long tabs for easy handling and insertion of the cell into the hearing device.

Siemens stands for the highest level of quality and reliability. Siemens batteries excel by their long lives as well as by a high and stable voltage, which ensures an excellent amplification. This results in a brilliant and distortion-free audio quality - whether in digital or analog hearing instruments.

User-friendly packaging for an optimal handling.
